Rana & her parents

Rana Townend was born in 1980 and raised in Orange County, California.  She is the oldest sibling of two younger brothers, Jye & Tosh.  Her parents met in 1976, while her mom, Loyann, a native Californian, was living on the North Shore of Oahu and her father, Peter, an Australian from the Gold Coast, was in Hawaii competing and making a name for himself as a pro surfer.  They spent the next few years traveling around the world.  Eventually they settled in Southern California near Loyann’s family but their free spirit, sense of adventure and love for travel they instilled in their children with yearly trips to Hawaii and Australia to surf and visit their Australian relatives.  Rana graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1998.

Sherri Vann was born in Auburn, Washington in 1978 and has also lived in Canada, Florida, Georgia and Australia, but most of her life she has lived in Grass Valley, California, which is located between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento.  Having lived in many places throughout her life, she’s always had a love for traveling and exploring somewhere new.  She has one older brother, David, who she has always looked up to and will be joining her and Rana on part of the trip.  She always knew that she wanted to live by the beach, so she moved off to Southern California for college.

We met in college at California State University of Long Beach.  It was the first day of promotional strategies class and instantly we hit it off & knew we should be friends.  It was in this same class that we met Natalie, whose wedding we were in earlier this year (2008) and is one of our best friends. Natalie (a photographer) & her husband, Chris (a website developer) live in Maui and helped us create this website.  Thanks so much you guys!

Sharing many common interests we soon became inseparable.  We both are very ambitious, so we pushed the limits while in college to get good grades while still having lots of fun…it’s all about balance. We work hard, we play hard and we live life to the fullest.  We graduated college in May of 2003.  Shortly after graduation we headed off to Europe for a few weeks of backpacking adventure.  With our train passes in hand and no hotel reservations anywhere we hopped around various countries…shopping the streets of Florence, swimming in the ocean in Cinque Terre, getting lost in Venice, mountain biking in Switzerland, hitting the coffee shops of Amsterdam, celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich, and waking up after a long night train in Brussels just so we could eat Belgian waffles for breakfast.

We crammed in a lot of sights and experiences which created memories we will cherish for our lifetime.   When traveling with a friend you really learn a lot about each other.  Being together non-stop for a lengthy period of time, in challenging circumstances you realize if this person is someone you can trust and travel well with.

In April of 2004, we moved in together in Newport Beach with one of our best friends from college, Tracy. At the time all three of the roommates were recently single and it was trouble!  We had a blast…our house was the the ultimate bachelorette pad!  Thinking back, we are not quite sure how we managed to go out all the time and still function at work.  But the life of the single roomies mellowed out a bit as we all eventually found ourselves in relationships.

For the last four years we have been busy moving forward with our careers and lives.  Sherri has been working in Commercial Real Estate Development and Rana has been working in sales in the Action Sports Industry for Billabong.  While we both love our jobs and all of the opportunities we’ve been given, these last few months we’ve really taken a look at what else we want to accomplish in our lives and seeing the world and finding a way to give back to those less fortunate was at the top of our list.

A few months ago we found ourselves single at the same time once again.  Both break-ups were hard for different reasons but instead of focusing on the negative we decided to focus our time and energy into something positive, which is how we got to where we are today, about to embark on the most amazing journey of our lives…
